The body colour of the workers is typically black, though some may be reddish black. The large size of the queen and workers makes them easy to identify.
Nests are in dead trees, rotting logs, and stumps. Indoor nests are in moisture- damaged and sound wood.
Colony. Activity begins in April and extends to November. In some regions, they are inactive from December to April. Colonies produce swarms at three to five years of age.
Habits. These ants forage primarily at night, usually peaking soon after sunset, extending into the night, then peaking again before sunrise. Well—established trails connect satellite nests and the main colony nest site.
