Worker body colour ranges from uniform yellowish brown to dark brown. The swarming adults have the same body colour, and their wings are light brown.
Nests are in exposed soil or under the cover of stones or logs; in open areas, the nests are sometimes in small mounds. Nests may be around the perimeter of buildings, along the foundation, and under concrete slabs.
Colony. Nest construction and foraging is done primarily at night. Winged males and females usually emerge from mid-March to July, but some swarms can occur as late as September. Indoors, swarming may occur from late fall to early spring.
The swarms of this ant are often confused with those of subterranean termites, because of their light brown colour and spring and fall swarming habits.
