Nests. They build nest mounds that may extend only slightly above the surface of the soil, or be several feet above the ground, as does the Allegheny mound ant.
Colonies and the soil mounds they occupy can become large.
Habits. These ants forage during the day on plants and trees; they feed on insects and take honeydew from aphids.
