Workers are yellowish brown to blackish brown.
Nests are above—ground mounds. Workers enter and exit through holes six to 10 feet from the mound.
Colony. Swarms occur from April to November, colonies produce 4,000 to 6,000 winged adults. Food includes meat, grease, and other protein-rich food.
Habits. When colonies are disturbed, workers become aggressive and deliver a painful sting.
